Natural convection heat transfer in square enclosures having a horizontally positioned obstacle on one of the vertical wall is numerically investigated. The obstacle included wall has periodically varying temperature profile and the other vertical wall boundary condition is constant temperature. The horizontal walls of the enclosure are assumed to be insulated. The numerical results obtained for the prescribed cases are comparatively presented as distribution of streamlines and isotherms and average Nusselt numbers. Navier-Stokes equations given with the Boussinesq approximation are used to solve natural convection heat transfer problem in a square enclosure. The equations are discretized by finite volume method and the discretized equations solved via SIMPLE algoritm. The fluid in enclosure is assumed to be air and Prandtl number is taken as 0.71. Numerical analysis is performed for a range of Rayleigh number from 104 to 106. The obtained results show that the location of the obstacle on the vertical wall has noticeable effect on the heat transfer and the flow.
