Taxation as a Policy Instrument For Social and Economic Effects of Gambling
Günay, Hamdi Furkan
The personal and social benefits and harms of gambling, which has been more accessible, diversified, and widespread thanks to global internet use, sometimes find their place in country agendas. Due to its characteristics, the gambling sector requires effective management through public policies. In this direction, governments determine sectoral policies in two ways: by choosing to ban gambling activities completely or by regulating the sector by legalizing certain types. In this context, taxes stand out as one of the policy tools adopted by many countries. This research aimed to evaluate the success of taxes–as a public policy tool–in controlling the social and economic effects of the gambling industry. Through a systematic review, the role and success of taxation against the social and economic influences of gambling have been evaluated in light of literature research and application examples. The present study revealed that taxes, as a policy tool, are insufficient and may lead to undesirable results in combating gambling, which has limited-positive contributions to the country's economies but harms society by creating severe addictions and other irreversible social costs. © 2023 Günay, H. The COVID-19 pandemic has posed a significant impact on agriculture. Due to its importance in world trade and human life, the effects of the pandemic on the cotton economy were evaluated by using the data of important organizations such as the U.S. Department of Agriculture, the World Trade Organization, and International Cotton Advisory Committee in this study. With the Chow test, which measures of structural breaks, the effects of COVID-19 on cotton production and trade were examined. According to the Chow test results, the pandemic had no significant effect on cotton production, exports and imports in the People’s Republic of China and Türkiye, while being highly influential on cotton production and exports in the U.S. and Brazil. Distinctively, in Pakistan, it had a significant impact on cotton production and import. It was observed that although the demand, trade and prices for cotton were descended, the cotton prices started to recover with the increase in demand in the third quarter of 2020. In June 2022, the highest peak in cotton prices was observed. As a conclusion, it is shown that cotton production and trade during the pandemic were affected in all countries except People’s Republic of China and Türkiye. However, the marks of the effects of factors such as decreasing stocks, uncertainties in national economies, high inflation and increase in production costs on the cotton economy will be better understood in the coming years. © Articles by the authors; Licensee UASVM and SHST, Cluj-Napoca, Romania. Foreign Aid, Institutions, and Economic Performance in Developing Countries
Hayaloglu, Pinar
Although official development assistance presents a solution for developing countries to overcome the lack of capital, there is no consensus in the literature on the effectiveness of foreign aid. Moreover, opinions claiming that aid can only affect growth positively under certain conditions see institutional quality as an essential aspect that boosts the positive impact of aid. This study examines the relationships between foreign aid, institutional structure, and economic performance for 80 countries in Europe, America, Africa, and Asia. It is found that official development assistance and the quality of institutional structure in the sample countries affect economic growth positively. It also provides some suggestive evidence showing that foreign aid has a positive effect on the institutional structure.

Long distance relationship with workplace: Remote work and workplace spirituality
Demirbağ, Kübra Şimşek
In this study, workplace spirituality is discussed in the context of remote work and the COVID-19 pandemic. First, the focus is on the changes in the meaning and function of employees in the organization during the evolutionary process of industrialization and management paradigms. Afterward, conceptual frameworks for spirituality and workplace spirituality are presented, and in the last section, academic studies that deal with workplace spirituality with distance or hybrid work arrangements are included. Early studies offer insights and recommendations on conceptualizing, developing, and managing workplace spirituality. They all emphasize that spirituality is necessary for remote work as a tool to overcome stress and mental health problems and increase employee well-being. Unfortunately, the remote work and workplace spirituality literature is relatively narrow and needs to be expanded. © 2024 Kübra iyimsek Demirbaş;.
